It's the third close-call of the week. One symbol away from the bonus round, again. You see it on a thousand screens up and down the country — each one thinking this one comes good. That's what gambling is, really: a story. "I was there", "tonight it turns", "my luck is coming". Brains love stories, not statistics.
That's why a bonus feels like an invitation, not a calculation. So you pick with your gut. The problem is that the only difference between a good offer and a bad one is maths. This letter gives you the maths — so you're the one who reads the small print, not the one who clicks the pop-up.
First, the mathsThe truth behind "free"
Almost every welcome bonus has one word the ads never use: wagering. It's how many times you have to bet the bonus amount before any winnings become withdrawable.
Example: you win £5 from a bonus with 10x wagering. You then have to wager another £50 before that £5 can come out. Since 19 January 2026, UK online-casino welcome bonuses can carry a maximum of 10x wagering. Before that, 30x, 40x, even 50x were normal. Better, then. But 10x is still not a gift.
One sentence to remember: a free bet is not free money. It's a voucher — you stake it, and only the winnings are yours. The stake itself never comes back.

This is my small-print checklist. Screenshot it, paste it into your notes, run through it before any first deposit. It's saved me more than any bonus ever has.
- Check the UKGC licence. Search gamblingcommission.gov.uk for the operator's British licence. No licence, no deposit.
- Do the wagering maths. Bonus amount × wagering = the turnover you need before you can withdraw. 10x on a £30 bonus means £300 turnover.
- Note the expiry dates. Free bets and free spins often expire in 3 to 7 days. A bonus you can't use is no bonus.
- Look for the max-win cap. Some operators cap your bonus winnings (e.g. "max win £10"). Rare on the ad, always in the small print.
- Set your limits before you deposit. Deposit limit, time limit, reality check. The only strategy that always works.
And because this is a letter: forward it to someone who needs it. The more people know the rules, the less "free money" sounds free.
